F. Anders and L. E. Browder Ref Weekly Report - Blend Development Nicotine Reduction Additional experiments were performed using the ion exchange resin and successive water extractions. The problem of very low blend pH and ash after extraction appears to be rectifiable by pretreating the resin with calcium ions. A series of extractions using resin treated with calcium acetate has shown a gradual but progressive increase in both pH and ash. This is being pursued. Lemon Various encapsulation techniques are being explored while waiting for samples from Eurand Corporation. Initial attempts to encapsulate lemon oil using a salt coacervation procedure were not successful. Current efforts involve complex coacervation with gelatin/gum arabic; i.e., aqeous phase separation, using pH adjustment as well as dilution techniques to generate microcapsule formation. MALIBU Ultra A modified MALIBU blend is being prepared in which the FET content is increased to 30%. Casing and overshot were combined and revised by a reduction in sugar content. MISTY Menthol As additional quantity of MALIBU Lights blend was flavored using the "B" formulation for fabrication and packaging of cigarettes at Reidsville using metholated foil. TGE Samples of three Kaba Koulak tobaccos are being conditioned and cut for initial evaluation in 100% Oriental cigarettes versus TS. The samples are designated "'84 ATC," "'85 ATC," and "'85 TS." Other A quantity of PALL MALL Famous cut strip that was dried through the vertical steam dryer was used to prepare about 500 pounds finished product. This will be sent to Reidsville early next week. odl cc: RDC, PHL, ECC, DRB, JGB, JEM, BFP, LEB, JFA
