Collier Weekly Report - Manufacturing Services and Quality Assurance During the past week 7,200 pounds of DUK Flavor were shipped from the Flavoring Department to Reidsville. Mechanics from PGC were in the laboratory May 18 to work on Smoke Analysis' conditioning cabinet. They made an adjustment to the superheating valve to increase suction and head pressure in the cabinet. Other than that, they could find nothing mechanically wrong with it. They will return tomorrow to check on the cabinet which is currently operating correctly. A. L. Blackburn has completed the evaluation of different nicotine purity levels for the making of nicotine standards for Smoke Analysis. In the past nicotine used for these standards has been distilled to provide 100% purity. It was concluded that a change to 99% nicotine would be feasible and this change was instituted May 14, 1993. Smoking machine #2 has malfunctioned. R. Brown from Filtrona was here to repair it today. J. P. Fisher has changed the export routine on a program written several months ago for C. Noble. The change allows exporting of a date range of samples. At J. W. Wilkinson's request, significant changes have been made by J. P. Fisher to the Market Lot QC report for visual inspection of cigarettes in Physical Testing. Testing of the new program was successful. A. J. Fultz and I will attend an Environmental Friendly Packaging TQI meeting at the Administrative Center tomorrow. Items for discussion include packaging material thickness data, review of pallet types, updates of pallet spec 103-2 and review of progress on environmental projects by each manager. On May 18, E. D. Moore was in Reidsville for a line trial using the following laminate: polypropylene film (Mobil and Borden), 100% blue ink, 100% lacquer, metallization, polyethylene resin and 12 pt SBS board supplied by Graphics Packaging as crush proof box and outer carton. Physical Testing has completed the evaluation of the new Borgwaldt Auto Hardness Tester D37A. It correlated well with the old D36 Auto Hardness Tester and with the Filtrona CTS 400 firmness module. They will begin using it routinely as soon as J. P. Fisher completes the program to link it to the computer. R. Brown from Filtrona was in Physical Testing May 17 to replace a computer chip on the new Filtrona circumference gauge. It did not solve the problem and he is here today to try another chip. The calibration rods for Reidsville's pressure drop gauge have been calibrated by Physical Testing and returned to the Branch. J. E. Garrett delivered four rolls of Hercules 383 BC polypropylene film with antistat as an alternate to the presently approved 383 TC film. The MTR has been processed and sent, along with the rolls of film, to Reidsville. In addition, MTR 1839 for 383 BC without antistat has been processed and forwarded to Reidsville. cc: RSS JFA-JGB-JEM PRC WTP-EG-DOP AIF-WRT RDC-DRB-AFP
