Hall Secretary, Committee on Contributions DATE December 20, 1963 FROM W. R. Harlan, Managing Director Research and Development SUBJECT Sloan-Kettering Institute While we believe research of the type described in the letter from Dr. Horsfall, President and Director of Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research, to Mr. Walker has definite merit and could be considered a boon to mankind, we favor the support of research which is more directly related to tobacco and which could accrue more immediate benefit to the industry. In addition to our support of the TIRC are grants for research at a number of institutions including Medical College of Virginia, Duke University, MIT, N.C. State College, University of Tennessee, Virginia Institute for Scientific Research, etc. All of these grants, with the possible exception of MIT, are for research directly related to tobacco. As you mentioned in your memorandum, we have made a contribution of $50,000 to Sloan-Kettering Institute's building program and the allocation of additional funds this year for research purposes could be construed as a willingness on our part to donate on a continuing basis. Consequently we would be reluctant to recommend additional support to Sloan-Kettering Institute at this time. WR Harlan ESH:hc cc: Mr. V. D. Hager Mr. R.K. Heimann
