The smoke exposure will be assessed in both workplace and non-workplace environments. CONFIDENTIALITY Personnel involved with the study will be required to acknowledge its confidentiality by signing a a confidentiality statement. LOCATION AND TIMING This study will take place in twelve (12) cities, within the contiguous forty-eight states. The twelve cities will be geographically dispersed on the basis of population demographics and climate. All demographic estimates in regard to site selection are taken from the 1990 Census Regions/Division data. Within the twelve selected cities, Bellomy Research, Inc. will select field services on the basis of reliability, efficiency, space requirements and availability. Field testing will begin approximately May 2, 1993 in the pilot city, and the last city should be completed by November 20, 1993. RECRUITMENT/SAMPLE SIZE Approximately 1200 participants will be recruited, with an ending sample size of 1000 (min.) to 1150 (max.). Participants will be screened via telephone from within an approximate thirty (30) mile radius of each facility. Trained interviewers will administer a screening questionnaire (- 20 minutes). Each participant will be either "terminated" or "qualified" (invited to participate) depending on his or her responses to specific questions. An estimated 10-15% of participant data may be excluded from analysis for technical reasons. TEST SUPERVISION At least one representative from each party will attend the pilot test (city #1). During all subsequent test sessions, there will be at least one representative from both Bellomy Research and RJR/R&D. The BRI representative will act as project supervisor and hostess, while the R&D representative will be responsible for the air sample monitors.
