Crouse SUBJECT: Status of Research Projects as of May 1, 1986 The intent of this memorandum is to briefly describe my 1986 project activities to date. The project descriptions will also include activities external to the Tobacco Sciences group. Hazard Communication Project - H-447 The majority of my project time has been devoted to the administrative development and implementation of the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (federal and state). In December 1985, I was charged with the responsibility of ensuring corporate compliance for all QA/QC and R&D laboratories. The development of the administrative network was initiated in January 1986. One must appreciate the necessity of interdepartmental cooperation since the compliance deadline in May 25, 1986. I am presently actively involved in developing a data base managed chemical inventory, training of all personnel (laboratory), developing the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) distribution system, consulting with the compliance personnel in the manufacturing sector and finally preparing the written compliance guide. As of May 1, 1986, all QA/QC personnel in our Danville and Greensboro facilities have been adequately trained, and the MSDS for each department has been copied and organized. The projected compliance schedule for all laboratories should be May 9, 1986. Once the program is in effect only routine auditing of the MSDS and training programs should be required. A comprehensive report on these activities will be written by mid-May 1986. Alkaloids in Tobacco - B-429 Due to my activities in the aforementioned project, my activity in the analysis segment for TSNA has been limited. A majority of the analyses have been carried out by Ms. Rosemary Pike. Basically, I have acted as a troubleshooter for routine gas chromatographic problems. We are still pursuing a IBM/PC menu driven program for the TSNA calculations. Mr. Ross dePinto, Lorillard's IBM PC specialist has been actively involved with this endeavor. Due to his time restraints, the final program has been delayed. It is hoped that a workable menu-driven program, usable by all of our group members, will be finished by late May 1986. Air Quality - Q-123 To date, the majority of activity in this project has been Federal Register and literature monitoring. A visual air quality survey of the Louisville facility will be carried out in early May 1986. Previously I have reported EPA activity in the area of fluorocarbon regulations to Dr. Spears. This activity will be monitored closely. Selective Filtration - B-444 Very little activity has been realized for this project. In early 1986, only one set of cellulose filters were treated with the polymeric amine and its buffered acetate salt. The smoking data were recently received from Dr. Lewis' group and has not been analyzed. The potential for this project still remains high. It has been learned that a rod maker will be installed in our pilot plant giving us convenient access for the preparation of experimental filters. Miscellaneous Activities My involvement with environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) issues continue. I am presently gathering resource information for a technical writer contracted by the Tobacco Institute. I am following indoor pollution, protocols and subsequent developments with ETS carefully. W.
