H Mayhall /hjf DATE August 16, 1960 SUBJECT Oil of Flouvs Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation Louisville 1, Kentucky INTERNAL CORRESPONDENCE The sample of "Nawrik" flavor identified as Oil of Flouva has been found to be derived from Sweat Vernalgrass. The grass having this characteristic odor is produced chiefly in France. The odor principle of this is coumarin. The diluted oil produces an aroma that is quite pleasant with a sweet heaviness, reminiscent of the "Yardlay" cosmetic line. It adds a pleasant Fixative note to tobacco. It has been learned from the University of Kentucky that Sweet Vernalgrass is adapted across the United States north of the latitude of Tennessee where moisture conditions are satisfactory for its growth. The plant makes but light growth in comparison with other adapted grasses, and is unpalatable to livestock because of its coumarin content. The sample of Nawrik flavor is being checked for its coumarin content and other identifyable components H. W. Mayhall
