Jakob RE: Weekly Highlights FTD DATE: June 19, 1988 - Several models containing an ether extract of the middle layer of K-22 condensable liquid (K-22 ML) were evaluated. There are some promising flavor characteristics to this material. Further fractionation and evaluation of burley and flue-cured ML materials is planned. - The use of Guaiacol was also tried in a model. Guaiacol has a smoky taste. Its use in this case did not improve the overall flavor of the model. - The pyrolysis of extracts has concentrated on spray dried CAG-X in glycerin and BX-9 (Naarden aerosol) this week. The heat treatment does modify the flavor of the extract. Flavour evaluation of treated extracts alone and with other flavor notes (e.g. coffee) is ongoing. - Ames test performed on K-22 ML material at a 2% level in models was negative. - Spray dried extracts have been prepared from five types of tobacco from Greece. These will be evaluated for taste properties. - A lower concentration of cigar tobacco vapor in Triacetin is being evaluated on carbon filter plugs. - Four new carbons were evaluated using CG1 tobacco vapor. All were similar but had some different cigarette character. - Models using 10 mg of vaporized carbon in the back of the capsule have been made. These will be evaluated on a day to day basis. - Calgon Corp. is going to send powder forms of different carbons, including the four new types, to make filter materials. S. W. Jakob /bwc 1 25
