AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE Genetics/Physiology The installation of high intensity lighting in the R&D greenhouse was completed this week. This greatly improves the usability of this facility during the winter months. Twenty-six, 400 watt, metal halide lights were installed in a flexible system that will allow for several areas of controlled lighting within the greenhouse. Agricultural Support to RJRTI CHINA: At the request of L. M. McLawhorn, Director, RJRTI, and J. K. Perry, President, RJR Nabisco China, recommendations for flue-cured tobacco research projects were developed in China. These projects, designed for Lin Hua County, Fujian Province, include investigations on harvest dates, plant populations, nitrogen rates, varieties, and transplanting dates. MALAYSIA: Soil test reports from Malaysia have been reviewed and summarized. Soil acidity and high levels of iron and copper were observed as possible problem areas. Application of the recommended rates of dolomitic lime should greatly improve tobacco production potential. University Programs Tobacco research and RJRT supported projects at NCSU and the Oxford Research Station (USDA) were reviewed on 10/22-23. Cooperative Programs 24 samples representing the experimental variety entries in the Regional Farm Tests from the Middle and Old Belts of North Carolina were received and submitted from chemical analysis. Agricultural Support to RJRT 912 samples of RJRT flue-cured purchases from the 1987 crop were processed and selectively composited for pesticide residue analysis. 54 composite samples were prepared for Kabat analysis. 6 samples of RJRT flue-cured strips from the 1987 flue-cured crop, processed by dealers, were prepared and submitted for pesticide residue analysis. 54 samples of flue-cured, burley, Oriental, and G7 were composited by grade to 6 samples and submitted to Del Monte for pesticide residue analysis.
