DELIVERIES AT FTC SHOWED LITTLE DIFFERENCES. QUESTIONS: DELIVERIES WERE HIGH FOR ALPHA CIGARETTES WITH CAVITY FILTERS WHEN THEY HAD PAPERS WHICH BURNED BACK 8mm, WHAT WOULD BE THE DELIVERY IF THE PAPER DID NOT BURN BACK AS MUCH, ie. IF CIGTS. THERE WERE TWO MAJOR VARIABLES: ONE WAS MOUNT-END-PIECE, THE OTHER WAS FRONT-END PAPER. (SEE FIGURE I.) MOUTH-END-PIECE VARIABLE: 1. 10mm CELLULOSE (8.0/40,000 + 30mm STRAW WITH crimp) 2. 10mm POLYPROPYLENE P1483-90-4 + 30mm STRAW WITH CRIMP) PAPER VARIABLE: 1. 0% BURN ADDITIVE on INNER WRAP + 0% BURN ADDITIVE ON OUTER WRAP 2. 3 % CITRATE on INNER WRAP + 0% BURN ADDITIVE on OUTER WRAP 3. 0% BURN ADDITIVE on INNER WRAP + 4 % succinate on OUTER WRAP ALL COMBINATIONS OF THE ABOVE WERE MADE, WITH OTHER MATERIALS HELD CONSTANT. FIGURE II SUMMARIZES THE CONCEPT OF THIS EXPERIMENT. THE FOLLOWING DATA OBTAINED: * The models with 4 % succinate in the outer wrap since burn back was only 4mm. D. ACTUAL DATA SEE OTHER TABLES BOTTOM LINE: FILTERS WIT CAVITIES GAVE VERY HIGH DELIVERIES OF BOTH WTPM AND GLYCERIN AT 50/30 SMOKING, ESPECIALLY IN PUFFS 5-13. DELIVERIES AT FTC SHOWED FEW DIFFERENCES FROM CURRENT PRODUCTS. LIP TEMPERATURE WAS SLIGHTLY HIGHER THAN CURRENT PRODUCTS. FINGER TEMPERATURE WAS SLIGHTLY HIGHER THAN CURRENT PRODUCTS. TEMPERATURES WERE A FUNCTION OF AMOUNT OF PAPER BURN BACK. PAPER BURN BACK APPEARS TO BE RELATED TO TENDENCY OF TOBACCO JACKET TO BURN BACK. DELIVERY WAS A FUNCTION OF THE PAPER BURN BACK. ONLY FOR THE SAMPLES WITH 4% succinate IN THE OUTER WRAP, (BURN BACK 4-6 mm). THE OTHER PAPERS HAD SIMILAR DELIVERIES FOR BURN BACK RANGING FROM 5-8 mm. PRESSURE DROPS WERE ABOUT 20 UNITS lower THAN CURRENT PRODUCTS. THESE MODELS STILL LIT WELL AND THE DRAW SEEMED VERY EASY AND COMFORTABLE. NEXT STEPS: SEE FIGURE II. USE INNER WRAP 32-2 RATHER THAN 63-5 4. USE ADDITIVE IN GLASS MAT 5. Cooler Fuel ADVANTAGES: 1. LESS "WORK" NEEDED TO GET SMOKE, POSSIBLE MORE PUFFS. 2. BECAUSE LESS PAPER BURNED, POSSIBLE LESS "OFF" AROMA IN SIDESTREAM. 3. POSSIBLE COOLER SYSTEM. 4. POSSIBLE REDUCED CHANCE OF BURN-BACK INTO TOBACCO JACKET. 5. POSSIBLE LESS SENSITIVE TO MOISTURE, SINCE LOWER LEVELS OF B3 CAN BE USED. NEXT STEPS: 1. BEST PRESENT ALPHA WITH "THROTTLING" PAPERS. (SUBMIT FOR CRASH TEST) 2. VARIOUS M.E.P.'S WITH "C" GLASS. 3.
