Kornegay FROM: William L. Steele SUBJECT: FTC progress toward CO analysis At the Tobacco Chemists Conference last week in Greensboro, N. C., the major topic between cigarette company chemists and Pillsbury was the status of his CO machine. Generally, it was learned that he expects delivery about the end of this month; that he has removed the wall separating the conditioning and smoking areas to make more space for the machine; and that he believes the order has been sent for data processing equipment to handle the large number of data. Furthermore, he hopes to do some check-out of the equipment while testing the current pickup. The progress he will make is speculative but it is unlikely that he will have any CO results by the time the next T & N's are released (March to June 1978). Such results for subsequent samples, however, are a possibility. William L. Steele WLS:sbb cc: Senator Earle C. Clements Dr. Ivor W. Hughes Mr. Robert L. Kersey Dr. P. H. Leake Dr. Robert B.
