Isbister SUBJECT: Weekly Highlights-Process Technology & Development Long Range Process Development 1. Installation of a grain slitter for experiments with toasted grain as a tobacco substitute has been completed. Initial tests produced toasted grain with a uniform color very similar to tobacco. New Process Development 1. A large test will be done in the R&D plant over the next few weeks on strips put up at different particle size distributions at the stemmery a year and a half ago. This is part of the Task Force work to evaluate stemming specifications on final cigarette quality. 2. A test will be run on the G-7 pilot plant next week to evaluate additives to improve sheet strength. 3. Tests will be made on the G-7 pilot line to produce G-7 with lower nitrate components. This will be done by use of washed burley stems or changing the stem blend. 4. A modified cutter feed designed for reduced cutting pressure and increased filling capacity will be installed at #64 this week for evaluation. 5. A jury rig set up has been completed for converting the MORE carton to a truck flap closure from the current tear strip enclosure. Process Instrumentation Development 1. Calibration standard rods for use in air dilution instruments have been obtained and supplied to the Process Control Group in Manufacturing. 2.
