Hughes TOBACCO AND HEALTH RESEARCH INSTITUTE OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR January 31, 1973 Dr. I. W. Hughes Director of Research and Development Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corporation Louisville, Kentucky Dear Wally: The annual University of Kentucky Tobacco and Health Research Institute Workshop Conference is now scheduled for the week of March 26, 1973. The Conference will be held in Colonial Hall of the Campbell House Inn in Lexington Kentucky. Tentatively we are hoping to have a three day Conference with some night sessions, but because of the number of investigations to be reported it may be necessary to extend the Conference to the fourth day. It might be well to make reservations for a four or five day stay and in the event that we can restrict the Conference to three days, to plan on visiting with various investigators within the University program on the fourth and/or fifth day. In previous Conferences we have emphasized plans for future work because the program was just getting underway. This year the program has been in existence long enough for the investigators to report accomplishments. We believe that significant progress has been made and that you will find the Conference to be worthwhile for this reason. We have reserved a block of rooms at the Campbell House Inn, which will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. The block of rooms will be held until March 12 and reservation requests should be sent directly to the Campbell House Inn. The Institute staff will be most happy to assist in any way, and we do hope that you and/or your associates can attend. I would like to take this opportunity to inform you of a recent change in leadership at the Institute. I now have the position of Scientific Advisor to the program, and Dr. Alvin L. Morris, Vice President of Administration at the University is serving as Interim Director until a permanent Director can be named. Dr. Ernest W. Chick is serving in the capacity of Associate Interim Director and Dr. John F. Benner is the Associate Director in charge of the Core Service Technical Program. Dr. Morris, ,Dr. Chick and Dr. Benner hope that you will be able to attend so that they may have the opportunity of meeting you and I, of course, hope that you can attend to that we can once again have the opportunity of discussing Tobacco and Health research. Finalizing local arrangements, banquet plans, and all other such Conference details would be made easier if you would let us know your plans as soon as possible. We do hope that you will be able to attend and that you will consider this a personal invitation from the new Scientific Advisor and the entire Institute staff. With kindest personal regards, Sincerely yours, R. B. Griffith, Ph.D. Scientific Advisor
