Schweitzer-Mauduit (SWM) investigated several strategies for paper redesign and elected to focus on the development of a 100% chalk paper utilizing an experimental precipitated calcium carbonate (Ultrapaque ) being developed by Specialty Minerals Inc. (SMI). Three mill trials were conducted by SWM to establish the required filler specifications to produce premium white base tipping paper (GSR336) whose specifications matched current premium tipping (GSR236). The major issue for paper development was achieving the high opacity target without the use of titanium dioxide. Issues related to product performance were addressed through conversion trials (printing and perforation) and cigarette model production in Semiworks. Data are presented which describe the range of conversion parameters which were examined in short trials to show no major hurdles which would have precluded further material development. The project was subsequently terminated by PM. SWM estimated that the filler and paper development were essentially 80% completed.
