<> Dear <>
Thank you for sending us a copy of the letter you wrote to the Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding its proposal to regulate tobacco
produts. We have heard from other concerned smokers who have also
taken the time to let FDA Commissioner Kessler know that they oppose
his misguided plan to regulate cigarettes. Hopefully, t The firestorm
of opposition that the FDA's plan has generated thus far will help
the FDA, as well as members of Congress and President Clinton, know
the depth of opposition to realize that the FDA's proposal would infringe
on adult smokers' right to choose. Commissioner Kessler claims that
these strict restrictions are necessary as a way to prevent minors
from smoking. And while most everyone, including Philip Morris USA
, agrees that preventing minors from smoking is a worthy goal, the
FDA's proposal goes so far in its restrictions far beyond the issue
of youth smoking that is clear we believe the agency's true motive
is to ban all cigarettes. Smoker's Advocate will continue to keep
you informed as this issue develops. In the meantime, we are delighted
to know that you are a strong supporter of the right to choose. With
best wishes.
Sincerely, Christine L. Donohue Editor
