February 15, 1984 Mandlikova Joins Navratilova at Virginia Slims of Boston Hana Mandlikova, the 1984 story of the year in women's tennis thus far, will be joining Martina Navratilova in Boston next month when they head a field of 32 of the top players in the world at the Virginia Slims of Boston, the third event in the 1984 Virginia Slims World Championship Series, to be held March 26 - April 1 at the Walter Brown Arena. The Virginia Slims Series links 57 tournaments on four continents--including the Grand Slam events--to determine who will be the World Champion of women's tennis. In addition to competing for $150,000 in prize money at this event, the players will also be vying for valuable Virginia Slims Series points which count towards the $1 million year-end bonus pool and the title of World Champion. Mandlikova's 1984 campaign thus far has been perfect. She has played in three Virginia Slims-named tournaments (Washington, California and Houston) this year and triumphed at all three, moving her into fifth position in the Women's Tennis Association computer standings. In the finals at the Virginia Slims of California, Mandlikova, a former United States and French Open champion, broke Navratilova's 54-match winning streak with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 victory. The Virginia Slims of Boston will kick off Monday, March 26, with a single evening session beginning at 7:00 p.m. Double sessions will begin the next day at 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. and will continue through Thursday. The quarterfinals are scheduled to be played at 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Friday, the semis at noon and 7:00 p.m. on Saturday and the finals are set for 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 1.
