Kabi Pharmacia Nicorette Box 941 S-251 09 Helsïngborg Sweden Convex Travel is the Official Agent for this Congress WELCOME ADDRESS Dear Colleagues and Friends The International Congress on Smoking Cessation will take place in Glasgow, Scotland from 5-8 March 1994 (inclusive). The scientific programme will consist of major plenary sessions, oral presentation sessions, poster display/discussion sessions, workshops and satellite symposia. The programme has been designed to focus on the rationale for smoking cessation to reduce the risks of both active and passive harmful effects, the ways in which these risks might be reduced and the practical approach to smoking cessation. The latter part of the congress will concentrate on the practical issues, looking at available intervention strategies and their embodiment in a comprehensive approach to the problem. Glasgow is a city bestowed with some of the finest Victorian architecture, classical and modern art and opera. Championship golf and spectacular scenery are close at hand. These attractions, combined with an excellent conference centre, make Glasgow an ideal venue for this event. I have the pleasure of inviting the international scientific community to what should be a stimulating scientific event and a fruitful congress for all participants. NICORETTE® (Kabi Pharmacia Ltd) In recognition of the world-leading position of Nicorette® in the research and development of smoking cessation therapies, the company is pleased to be a major sponsor of the First International Congress on Smoking Cessation. Our involvement in smoking cessation began in the 1960's. A team of physiologists from the University of Lund approached the Swedish scientist Ove Ferno, employed with what is now Kabi Pharmacia. During their investigations into the poor concentration and irritability typically found among submarine crews, they suspected that these symptoms might actually be linked to the nicotine abstinence enforced by the smoking ban on board. Ove Ferno hypothesised that replacement nicotine in another form may alleviate symptoms associated with nicotine withdrawal. Thus the concept of nicotine replacement therapy was formed. Further research and development led to the registration of Nicorette® gum as a leading treatment for smoking cessation. At Nicorette®, we recognise that no two smokers are alike. With this in mind we are committed to providing a range of dosages and forms tailored to meet individual needs. Nicorette® Patch is now becoming established in many countries and will soon be joined by other new and innovative products offering an effective choice for millions of smokers who want to give up and need help. We at Nicorette® wish every success to this congress and hope that our support will contribute towards the further sharing of knowledge and understanding of all working in this challenging area. 12
