Parrish VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL COUNSEL (212) 880 3074 July 10, 1992 Mr. Fred H. Walton 7214 Maple Avenue Chevy Chase, MD 20815 Dear Mr. Walton: Mr. Miles has asked me to respond to your June 21 letter. We share your concerns regarding recent reports discussing "passive" or environmental tobacco smoke. Scientific research such as you suggested (comparing non-smokers who live, work, etc. with smokers to non-smokers who live, work, etc. with non-smokers) has been done and, as you predicted, is supportive of our position. In fact, there have been 30 completed, published studies of the type you described and 23 of those have found no statistically significant increased risk of lung cancer from exposure to environmental tobacco smoke. Indeed, the largest completed study in the United States (Janerich) and the largest completed study in the world (Wu-Williams) reported no increased risk whatsoever of lung cancer. I have enclosed a list of the published studies, as well as full copies of the Janerich and Wu-Williams papers. Also enclosed is a July 1991 issue of Consumers' Research which discusses the environmental tobacco smoke issue. Obviously, recent news reports have not accurately reflected the results of this research. We are attempting to address this problem. Thank you very much for your letter. Sincerely, Enclosures bcc: D. Bartlett M. Bring M. Miles C. Wall RECEIVED JUL 13 1992 MICHAEL A. MILES
