LINCOLN 120 PARK AVENUE NEW YORK, N.Y. 10017 March 18, 1987 Dear Jim: I assume you have seen the Byers et al article on diet and lung cancer risk in the March issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology. I think the article may subsequently understate the influence of fat intake on lung cancer. I base this on the guess that the lowest fat intake quartile in Western New York still consumes a lot more fat than the average citizen of the really low fat intake countries. The above could be affirmed if the authors would release index numbers comparing the fat intake averages for their quartiles with the grand average of fat intake for their sample. My guess is that you or Dr. Wynder would have a far better chance of gaining the authors cooperation than I. Please let me know if you will be willing to make the attempt. Sincerely, James R.
