DEVELOPMENT PROJECT SUMMARY TITLE: BURLEY STEM FLAVOR OBJECTIVE: Develop
and evaluate methods for the utilization of burley stems. CURRENT
STATUS: 1. Schweitzer burley stem sheet (SBS) currently being used
in production at 1.1%. RL in use at 2.5% 2. Evaluation of flavored
EBS completed. Results satisfactory--POL requested. Alternate versions
to be tested via RP³. 3. RP³ on EBS washed versus unwashed completed.
Marlboro smokers and combined prefer washed EBS. 4. RP³ on Marlboro
control versus 7% washed burley stems released. 5. RP³ on flavor cased
EBS requested--awaiting EBS. 6. RP³ on peroxide treated EBS completed.
NSD versus control. 7. RP³ on Marlboro control versus total replacement
of BL by unflavored RL completed. Samples are different, test is harsher,
Marlboro smokers identify control. 8. RP³ on flavored RL total replacement
of BL completed. Marlboro smokers find no differences, regular filter
smokers find control harsher. 9. Combinations of RL and BL being evaluated
in a '76 blend by National POL. 10. The 1975 Marlboro with 5% EBS
(replacing burley strip) to be tested on RP³. 11. Cooperative work
to determine humectant loss. PROBLEMS: 1. Subjective flavor characteristics
of burley stems 2. Analytical determinations of humectants 3. Reduced
