DIRECTOR OF APPLIED RESEARCH August 23, 1982 Dr. Ray F. Dawson P.O. Box 2218 Winter Park, Florida 32790 Dear Ray: Thanks for your letter of August 3 and the observations and thoughts it contains. My general approach is to circulate your comments to the managers involved or to make copies for them of those comments pertinent to the work done in their division. We have some interesting results to discuss with you on burley character the next time you are here. From a subjective viewpoint, Cliff Lilly, et al appear to have succeeded in treating DBC bright such that our smoking panelists (i.e. including H. Spielberg et al) accept it as DBC burley. The treatment is based on results obtained from our curing studies and is consistent with the changes we have been measuring. I hope that puts you in suspense, but your letter to Dr. Ikeda is not far off the mark in points 1 and 3. I specifically hope that you can have continued contact with Gordon Bokelman to help him evaluate time spent between the choices of 1) developing new analytical methods, 2) refining and improving the existing methods on problems of interest. I'm afraid the temptation will be all devoted toward 3) and we will lose a bit of the "futures". Anyhow, whether you are on Osdene's or my chit doesn't really matter to either of us. I think you will find R&D a much more relaxed open atmosphere. I look forward to your continued inputs. Sincerely, /hws cc: Dr. T. S. Osdene Mr. W. F. Kuhn Mr. A. C. Lilly Dr. J. F. Whidby
